In full EU Digital DecadeThe challenge is for 90% of SMEs to acquire at least a basic level of digital intensity by 2030. Today, in Spain, only 61% have achieved this, leaving tens of thousands of microenterprises at risk of being left out of new markets. To close this gap—and at the same time channel funds Next Generation US—, the Government launched Kit Digital Spain at the end of 2021, as part of the 2021-2025 SME Digitalization Plan and the Spain Digital Agenda 2025. The program, managed by Red.es, was launched with an initial budget of €3.067 billion and the stated mission of modernizing the productive fabric without forcing companies to advance capital.

Why was a digital voucher necessary?
Before the pandemic, Spanish micro-SMEs were clearly disadvantaged compared to the EU average in e-commerce, use of big data, and cloud adoption. COVID-19 accelerated online consumption and highlighted that many small businesses lacked functional websites, digital sales channels, or basic cybersecurity. At the same time, European funds required projects with a measurable impact on competitiveness and employment. Kit Digital Spain It was therefore designed as a dual response: to close the technological gap and to take advantage of an unprecedented financial opportunity.

How aid is structured Kit Digital Spain
The program is organized by workforce segment to ensure that each company receives an amount appropriate to its size:
| Segment | Number of employees | Maximum bonus |
|---|---|---|
| I | 10-49 | €12 000 |
| II | 3-9 | €6 000 |
| III | 0-2 | €3 000 |
| IV | 50-99 | €25 000 |
| V | 100-250 | €29 000 |
The SME doesn't handle cash: once the voucher is granted, it "consumes" it by signing agreements with approved digitalization agents who bill Red.es directly. The solution categories range from web presence and e-commerce to virtual offices, artificial intelligence, and electronic invoicing, so each beneficiary creates their own digitalization "menu."
Halfway results
Four years after the start, Kit Digital Spain has already distributed more than 550 bonds, equivalent to €2.200 billion mobilized in ICT tools and services. According to Red.es, 70% of beneficiary companies report having increased online sales or improved their operational efficiency in less than a year. The pace of granting puts the program on track to reach the official target of 800 digitalized SMEs by the end of 000.
2024-2025 Updates: Medium-sized Enterprises and Increased Amounts
The calendar has been extended and expanded:
- Segments IV and V (50-250 employees) can request their bonus until June 30th, 2025.
- Segment III You now have until 31th October 2025, in addition to a retroactive increase in aid from €2.000 to €3.000.
In parallel, the Government has launched Kit Consulting, a strategic advisory voucher of up to €24 that accompanies the technical implementation with a medium-term evolution plan. 000% of SMEs that have already used Kit Consulting had previously been beneficiaries of Kit Digital Spain, which reinforces the idea that digital transformation is an ongoing process, not a one-time expense.
Express procedure and basic requirements on the Kit Digital Spain
The form can be completed in about 20 minutes if the company has its electronic certificate on hand and passes a simple digital maturity self-assessment. The grant is issued on a first-come, first-served basis without competitive bidding; in practice, the decision is made within a few weeks. After receiving the voucher, the SME has six months to sign agreements and twelve months to justify implementation; if the credit is not exhausted, the remaining amount is automatically revoked.
Keys to making the most of aid
- Think processes, not gadgets. Choose solutions that eliminate bottlenecks (inventory management, billing, customer service) rather than “trendy” tools.
- Combines several categories. Nothing prevents you from allocating part of the bonus to e-commerce and part to cybersecurity if that improves your value proposition.
- Measure and adjust. Integrate web analytics or BI from the start to evaluate performance and ROI.
- Spread digital culture. Train employees on the use of new platforms; technology only adds value when the organization adopts it.
El Kit Digital Spain It's not just a grant: it's the passport for SMEs to compete in a market where customers demand immediacy, regulations require electronic invoicing, and artificial intelligence is changing the way we sell. Whether it's to open an online store, strengthen cybersecurity, or automate the back office, the program offers a unique opportunity to leap forward several years in a matter of months. With deadlines underway and funding still available, passing up the opportunity can be much more expensive than investing the time required to apply.
